Basil Bunting had an eventful life. To put it mildly. At various
times of his extravagant career, he was a sea captain, a bartender, a
builder's labourer, a diplomat (British Vice-Consul at Isfahan), a
spy (for MI6), a student of classical Persian, a music critic, a
university lecturer in English and a layabout.
He worked as a well-paid foreign correspondent for The Times and
other eminent journals, then, forgotten, drudged for years as a night
sub-editor for regional newspapers. Jailed as a conscientious
objector (Quaker variety) in the First World War, and treated
