How to travel through the heart of Ireland at a snail's pace without stirring a muscle? I planned a leisurely cruise on a narrow boat on the river Barrow, which flows south from the Bog of Allen, dividing Carlow and Kilkenny before spilling into the sea near Waterford.

The brochure described the river as twisting its way through pastures, valleys and woods; passing historic towns like Athy, Carlow and Graiguenamanagh. My heart rose at the thought of jolly boating weather. In reality, much of the time was spent chorusing a new rhyming version of "Swing, swing together with a wide open ...
