Royal Court comes back in anger for new battle with establishment

THE ROYAL Court theatre in London lived up to its reputation as the anti-establishment voice last night when its reopening after a four-year closure was marred by a bizarre dispute with the burghers of Chelsea.

A centrepiece of the theatre's pounds 26m redevelopment is a restaurant planned to open on to the middle of Sloane Square. But, though the entrance is ready, the Royal Court admits planning permission has been refused, because the owner of the square, Cadogan Estates, said it did not want theatregoers milling about.
