THOUSANDS OF distraught mourners gathered in the freezing rain
outside Pskov's 17th-century Holy Trinity Cathedral yesterday, their
thoughts far from the country's shoo-in presidential election for
Vladimir Putin.
In Russia's biggest outpouring of grief after nearly six months of
war, they bid farewell to some of the 85 paratroops wiped out in a
single clash in Chechnya. The mourners, many of whom were in uniform,
stood with heads bowed before the row of coffins, each draped in the
Russian tricolour flag and covered with flowers, mostly red
carnations.
