HER VOICE husky with what Valerie Grove called "the rasp of gin and cigarettes", Lorna Wishart, lover and muse to both Laurie Lee and Lucian Freud, was a woman with an "utter lack of any convention", as her son-in-law Julian David remembers.

Born Lorna Garman in 1911, she was the ninth and youngest child of Walter Chancellor Garman of Oakswell Hall, Wednesbury, "an almost legendary doctor", wrote Lorna's son, the talented but wayward painter Michael Wishart, in later years "still remembered cantering through nocturnal snowstorms to attend the more remote patients".
