THE GREAT Romantic tradition of organ-playing in France stretches back over a century, beginning with the design of the large, symphonic instruments that made it possible and embracing among its leading exponents the great composer- organists like Cesar Franck, Alexandre Guilmant, Louis Vierne, Charles- Marie Widor, Charles Tournemire and Maurice Durufle. With the death of Marie-Madeleine Durufle, widow of Maurice, one of the last links with that tradition is broken.
