EVERYONE in the car knew Martin Palmer was obsessed. All his adult
life he had dreamed of finding a lost temple, or some other fragment
of the extraordinary vanished church that had changed his life. Now,
after years spent studying ancient texts, the trail of Chinese gods
and Japanese spies had led him to the middle of nowhere. The four-
wheel-drive vehicle had travelled out of Xi'an city into rural
northern China along tarmac roads, which became single-lane country
lanes, then earthen tracks...
