PUBLIC RECORD OFFICE: Raid to assassinate Rommel rejected

THE SPECIAL Operations Executive rejected a chance to assassinate Field Marshal Erwin Rommel because it would have been a suicide mission.

The opportunity arose in April 1943, when Montgomery had reversed the Germans' supremacy in North Africa with his victory at Alamein and Rommel had been pushed back to the Tunis coast. A plan was put forward to send a four-man liquidation squad into Rommel's coastal headquarters, say papers released by the Public Record Office.
