THE IMPORTANT role of the "little" magazine in 20th-century
literature is exemplified by the French journal Intentions, whose
founder, editor and owner was Pierre Andre-May.
Intentions only existed for three years, between 1922 and 1924,
but in 30 issues published an extraordinary range of talent and
encouraged a whole generation of younger writers. This was all the
more remarkable as Andre-May was in his early twenties, had never
been involved in publishing and created and sustained Intentions
entirely by himself, soliciting, selecting, editing and printing
