CARTHUSIAN MONKS are not in the habit of seeking publicity. They
live solitary lives, communicating with each other only on their
weekly five-hour walks, and with the outside world on the annual
family visits. Apart from these occasions, they break their silence
only for their thrice- daily prayers.
The Carthusians are the most contemplative and withdrawn religious
order in the Catholic Church. They live an entirely enclosed
existence. There are just 450 Carthusian monks and 100 Carthusian
nuns worldwide, and 28 of them live in St Hugh's Charter-house,
