IF GOTLANDERS weren't laid-back Scandinavians you might expect them to be separatists. Slap bang in the middle of the Baltic Sea, Gotland is scarcely nearer to mother Sweden than to Lithuania.

Gotlanders are constantly telling you about their incomprehensible dialect and their unique cultural traditions. Are they even Swedes at all?

"Oh yes," they concede, gloomily.
