Autumn bulb-planting is one of those annual rituals, like pruning
clematis or picking the apple crop, which measures out the gardening

These general guidelines will help you get started: The time to plant is now. Try to have all spring-flowering bulbs planted by Thanksgiving. Planting depth for spring-flowering bulbs is an inexact science. Most experts recommend planting bulbs three times as deep as the bulbs are tall, or generally with about 6 inches of soil covering the tips of the bulbs. Deep planting encourages bulbs to multiply. Smaller bulbs, such as crocus and muscari (grape hyacinth), can be covered with only 2 inches of soil, but planting them a bit deeper, so they are covered with 4 inches of soil, discourages squirrels from digging them up. If rain is not in the forecast, water well after planting. Mulch helps hold moisture in the soil and keeps the soil temperature even.
