The Government indicated last night that it was ready to jettison moves to reduce the gay age of consent to 16 - so that its flagship Anti-crime Bill can pass into law before next week's summer recess.

After Wednesday night's defeat by peers, ministers must decide whether to try to force the amendment through the Lords again next week, risking running out of time for the Crime and Disorder Bill.
