FRANZ KAHN was a distinguished astrophysicist, a world leader in
theoretical studies of the physics and the dynamics of the
interstellar medium.
His special gift was the ability to illustrate the essentials of a
complicated problem by the formulation of models which were both
mathematically tractable and which retained the essentials of the
system under study. His lifelong activity in Manchester's Department
of Astronomy as colleague to the late Professor Zdenek Kopal ensured
that Manchester theoretical studies would complement the radio
observations emanating from Jodrell Bank, with which he ...
