In this excellent collection of essays and reviews, Anita Brookner chides writers such as Rousseau and Baudelaire who, whatever they write, are really writing about themselves; and art critics who, whatever painting they look at, see only their own concerns.

What I propose to do, therefore, is rather insulting. Anita Brookner is a marvellous novelist, about whom we know almost nothing. But I've always thought there was probably a great deal of her in her heroines (first insult). Now I wickedly wonder if there isn't a great deal of her in her criticism too (second insult).
