An important cultural event last spring was "Paris-Bruxelles, Bruxelles-Paris", an exhibition held in both capitals which explored the links between French and Belgian art at the end of the 19th century. James Ensor was prominent in the show, and we saw that he had connections with Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism and even Art Nouveau - though he wasn't totally committed to any of these movements. Now he has a restrospective at the Barbican - not a very full one, but full enough - and he looks committed only to himself.
