Juan Bosch, 92, Dies; Led Dominican Republic

Juan Bosch, 92, a grand and tragic figure in Latin American politics who served as a charismatic and reforming president of the Dominican Republic for seven months in the 1960s, died Nov. 1 in Santo Domingo. He had neurological, respiratory and intestinal ailments.

Mr. Bosch won the presidency in a landslide in December 1962 in the first free elections in the Dominican Republic in 38 years. He called for land reform, better transportation and increased welfare programs, along with a public works program to build schools and hospitals.
