In lesser hands (or lungs), last Wednesday's concert at St
John's Smith Square of British carols could have been a pretty
deadly affair, especially given the high proportion of works by the
so-called "cow pat" brigade - composers in the early part of this
century who specialised in a particularly English pastoralism. But
that crack choir Polyphony, conducted by its founder, Stephen
Layton, made an extremely persuasive case for these largely
neglected works, suggesting at the very least that the unkind tenor
of "cow pat" is up for reassessment.
