Going out: Beaumarchais: his true story

Though he wrote two famous comedies, The Barber of Seville and
The Marriage of Figaro, Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais
seemed less keen on writing than social climbing. His life, in the
last years of the Ancien Regime, was as much the stuff of drama as
his plays - and now it's the stuff of cinema too. Edouard Molinaro
has revised an unpublished play by Sacha Guitry to make a
delightful period comedy, its cast headed by two rising stars:
