Joseph Beuys, medicine man

For Joseph Beuys, the only certainty in life was that nothing
was for certain. It is hardly surprising that in 1961 he should
have allied himself to Fluxus, the loose-knit radical group of
performance-based artists founded by George Maciunas. By 1965,
inevitably, Beuys had broken with the group, but when Maciunas died
young in 1977, Beuys, with fellow artist Nam June Paik, arranged
the tribute - a "concert" for two pianos. While Paik stuffed his
piano with a jacket, Beuys supported his on a wedge of felt. This
piano, now showing at the Anthony d'Offay Gallery, forms what, with
