Obituary: Maj-Gen Stanislaw Maczek

Stanislaw Maczek, soldier: born Szczerzec, Poland 31 March 1892;
major 1921, married; died Edinburgh 11 December 1994.
Stanislaw Maczek was the epitome of the good soldier, and one of
the outstanding, and last surviving, divisional commanders of the
Second World War.
A native of Galicia in the Austrian Partition of Poland, he
served on the Italian front in the First World War, somewhat
improbably in a Tyrolean regiment. In November 1918 he took command
of a Polish volunteer company and marched to the relief of his home
town of Lwow, besieged by Ukrainian nationalist forces. During the ...
