HERE we go again. Once more, a group of arty-farties, unable or
unwilling to cut it in the marketplace, starts whingeing on about
how the taxpayer owes them a living. Being writers, their
self-interest is naturally buttressed by all sorts of apocalyptic
stuff about the Death of the Form. Does not this tired controversy
(kicked off naturally by a letter to the Guardian) echo the equally
jaded debate over whether elderly playwrights have a right to have
their plays done forever as of right? Can it really matter to
anyone outside the narrow circle of literary luvvies?
