Letter: Paris opera: bringing the houses down

Sir: I agree with Mark Pappenheim's support for the diversity
supplied by London's two opera houses ("Is the fat lady singing?"
22 November), but he is wrong to say that Paris supports four opera
houses, let alone that "each has developed an identity all its
own".
Opera performances by France's national opera company (Le
Theatre National de l'Opera de Paris) take place at the new Opera
Bastille, which uses the old intimate Opera-Comique for some
small-scale productions. The old opera house (currently closed for
renovation) is now devoted to France's national ballet company (Le
