Israeli army bulldozers demolished 26 Palestinian houses in Gaza near the border with Egypt today, leaving dozens of people homeless and touching off a fierce gun battle.

Palestinian hospital officials said five Palestinians were wounded in some of the heaviest fighting since a U.S.-brokered truce was to have taken effect almost a month ago. The Israeli army said three soldiers were also hurt, one seriously.
