U.S. defense in good hands Pentagon chief Donald Rumsfeld has vision, coolness under pressure to lead the U.S. war effort

He is a cool operator.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, a former Navy fighter pilot, is the right person to direct the war on terrorism. It is, as he noted, "the first battleground of the 21st century."

Rumsfeld, 69, was in the Pentagon when the hijacked plane slammed into the building. He went into the damaged wing and personally helped victims into stretchers and ambulances.

"You've got a problem of terrorism that is not unique to the Pentagon or New York but across the globe is used by a number of people and organizations to impose their will on others," he said Thursday.
