NEW DELHI Plans to surround the Taj Mahal with cybercafes, fast- food restaurants and a mall have provoked outrage in India among traditionalists who fear the destruction of one of the remaining wonders of the world.

The development is part of a deal signed by the Indian government last week with the Taj Group, the country's largest hotel chain, to renovate and "upgrade" the Taj Mahal.
