Indian writer R.K. Narayan dies at 94

NEW DELHI, India R.K. Narayan, a novelist who depicted life in India with grace and humor, died Sunday after suffering from heart and lung trouble. He was 94.

Mr. Narayan had been hospitalized in Madras two weeks ago with internal bleeding, said N. Ram, a family friend who is editor of the magazine Frontline.

Born in Madras, the capital of southern Tamil Nadu state, Mr. Narayan began his career as a teacher before switching to journalism in the 1930s and becoming a full-time writer a few years later.
