The bouncing ball echoes through empty seats at dimly lit Allstate Arena. Even the swish of the net is audible.

A female usher is standing at one side watching, remembering when David Booth would go through this pregame warmup routine as a member of the DePaul Blue Demons. Noisy crowds and bands and cheerleaders and TV cameras and public-address announcements filled the place then.

Booth looks up and recognizes her, smiles and walks over to embrace her.
