SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. There's an unwritten rule in sports, particularly football, that a player shouldn't lose a starting position because of injury.

But as Arnaz Battle watched Matt LoVecchio compile victory after victory this season as Notre Dame's starting quarterback, Battle came to realize the job no longer belonged to him.
