Conch, the seafood of sunny mananas, has brought hard feelings to
Mango Mike's in Alexandria.
The Caribbean restaurant off Route 236 may drop its popular conch
fritters because too many customers taste disappointment in them.
Diners bring their island memories to the suburban bar with plastic
leis, and suddenly the conch fritters of vacations past seem
hopelessly out of reach.
"In the islands, everyone makes them differently," owner Mike
Anderson said of the breaded balls of chewy conch meat and stuffing.
"You can't make everyone happy . . . It's a very polarizing item."
