Former mayor of New York John Lindsay, 79

NEW YORK John Vliet Lindsay, a brash and handsome political
curiosity who was New York City's mayor during the tumultuous late
1960s and early 1970s, has died at age 79.
His family said Mr. Lindsay died at the Hilton Head Medical Center
on Hilton Head, S.C. Tuesday night after years of medical problems,
including Parkinson's disease, two heart attacks and two strokes.
Pneumonia was listed as the cause of death.
Carrying an Ivy League diploma, World War II Navy service papers,
patrician credentials and an avid following among minorities, Mr.
Lindsay nonetheless was not able to parlay his local ...
