Discovery threatens to change art history

Two months ago, Tomassio Strinati, a 27-year-old art historian, made a sensational discovery.

In a chapel in the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli in Rome, he stripped away an 18th-century painting of an altar cloth and found a fragment of a medieval fresco underneath. The fresco depicts Mary, Jesus and two saints, and it is in astonishingly good condition. Removing parts of the later fresco that covered the chapel walls, Strinati found several more medieval fragments. It's possible that underneath the more recent over-painting, the whole chapel is covered with medieval wall paintings.
