Jorge Amado, 88, whose good-humored and lusty tales made him
Brazil's all-time best-selling author, died of a heart attack Aug. 6
in a hospital in Salvador, the capital of Bahia state. He had
diabetes.
Mr. Amado wrote 32 books, and his work was translated into 48
languages. In Brazil, two of his novels -- "Gabriela, Clove and
Cinnamon" and "Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands" -- were made into
television series and movies, both starring the sultry actress Sonia
Braga.
