State grant to restore Market Hall
|
Labor Day is seldom the time for gift-giving, but this deviation
is OK: Pullman's burned-out Market Hall building, built a century ago
on the site where Clarence Darrow championed the eight-hour workday,
has received a $1.1 million rehab grant.
The grant, from the state's $12 billion Illinois FIRST public
works fund, is expected to turn the brick shell at 112th and
Champlain into a usable building for the first time in nearly 30
years.
Work is scheduled to begin in October and to conclude possibly by
mid-2001. That could mean a quick victory for preservation efforts in
the historic former ...
