BERLIN As busy as Daniel Barenboim seems to be in Chicago_moving
in a perpetual whirlwind as music director of the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra, as well as conductor, accompanist, piano recitalist and
coach to the Civic Orchestra_Chicagoans often forget that they don't
get to see another side of his musical life: his work as a conductor
of opera.
One of the reasons that Barenboim has made his home in Germany for
the last decade is that it has allowed him to pursue his great
passion for staged vocal music, especially, for the massive works of
