Art Institute to keep Jewish family's statue

A 17th century marble bust of a youth with curly hair will remain at the Art Institute of Chicago under an agreement between the museum and heirs of the art collector who owned it before the Nazis swept into France.

The work is an important piece by Italian sculptor Francesco Mochi and is dated about 1630. It may portray the young St. John the Baptist, said Ian Wardropper, curator of European decorative arts and sculpture at the museum.

Terms of the museum's agreement with the heirs of Federico Gentili de Giuseppe for a purchase and donation of the bust were not disclosed.
