AIDS cases surge with new count

A surge in reported AIDS cases in Illinois, the first in four years, probably stems from more aggressive reporting of the disease, some health officials said Tuesday, rather than an increase in the prevalence of the disease.

But they said the rate of HIV infection remains high and cautioned people not to relax to the dangers of HIV, the virus leading to AIDS, just because of recent advances in treatment.
