Patricia Roberts Harris featured on new stamp
|
Patricia Roberts Harris, the first African-American Cabinet
member, is this year's honoree in the Black Heritage series.
Harris was secretary of the U.S. Housing and Urban Development
Department during President Jimmy Carter's administration and later
headed the Health, Education and Welfare Department.
She is the 23rd African American to be portrayed in the series.
The Harris stamps will go on sale Jan. 27.
Harris was born in Mattoon, Ill., near Champaign-Urbana, in 1924,
the daughter of a Pullman railroad car waiter.
