Carving out niche for cinnabar
|
When most people think of cinnabar, small, carved red lacquer
boxes and trays with floral designs come to mind. Over the centuries,
cinnabar was also made in plum, green, brown and black. Other colors
should be considered carved lacquer, but in cinnabar style.
Some of the most magnificent and expensive examples are small
pieces of furniture, cabinets and ladies' combs.
Cinnabar was a special possession of royalty. Towering columns in
palaces and temples were cinnabar. Carved, red cinnabar lacquered
doors opened to reveal entire rooms of cinnabar furniture.
