James L. Zacharias of Winnetka was a lawyer and businessman who
helped the Dove Bar go national - but first and foremost in his long
life, he was a humanitarian concerned with personal freedom and
social justice.
Earlier this month, the Illinois American Civil Liberties Union
honored him with its Roger Baldwin Award "for long-time commitment to
and support of civil liberties." He had served on the Illinois ACLU
board of directors since 1983 and its executive committee since 1990.
