Barak says Israel must leave the Golan Heights
|
JERUSALEM Prime Minister Ehud Barak said Monday that Israel will
have to leave the Golan Heights, spelling out for the first time what
he means by a "painful compromise" with Syria in order to get a peace
treaty.
Barak has hinted strongly that Israel is willing to give back
most, if not all of the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau Israel
captured from Syria in the 1967 Six Day War, but Monday was the first
time he spoke publicly about a withdrawal.
