Moseley-Braun cheers `smear campaign' end

WASHINGTON Former Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun (D-Ill.) said the hearing Friday on her nomination to be ambassador to New Zealand, which resolved lingering ethics questions in her favor, ended "seven years of a smear campaign" against her.

"I don't know what it takes to put a stake in the heart of that kind of nasty rumor," she said of the ethics questions that dogged her single term in the Senate and contributed to her 1998 defeat.
