If there were a way to patent a vibe, John Lee Hooker would have
died a billionaire.
His invention -- the blues boogie, slowed to a lurid crawl --
became part of pop's hard-wiring, a beat and mood that gave rock its
roadhouse atmosphere and insinuating growl. Dressed impeccably and
blessed with a voice as silty as a Mississippi bog, he taught
listeners how to despair, mumble and flirt in style. Without him, the
music of artists like Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, ZZ Top and a
few dozen others would have lacked raunch and a lot of spine.
