Civil War works explore freedom

Paintings, photographs, prints and sculpture ponder the concepts
of newly freed slaves in "Terrain of Freedom: American Art and the
Civil War," a new exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago.
The exhibit is anchored by a new museum acquisition, "The
Freedman," an 1863 sculpture by John Quincy Adams Ward. "The
Freedman" is generally considered to be the first realistic bronze
representation of an African American.
A plaster cast of the statue was first exhibited in New York
shortly after the Emancipation Proclamation. At the time, art
