E. Timor welcomes forces Dili airport, harbor under UN control

DILI, Indonesia The international force that came to East Timor to
put an end to savage violence found only smiles and greetings of "Hey
mister" from children as they landed Monday in the East Timorese
capital.
The militia gangs that had rampaged in Dili had largely melted
away. Those who remained were not threatening. The Indonesian
military, whom witnesses said had abetted the violence and wallowed
in the looting, turned benevolent.
