Catholic studies chair to be first endowed at UIC

The University of Illinois at Chicago will become the first Illinois public university to have a Catholic studies chair under a $1.25 million endowment from the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The endowment, to be announced today, is funded by a grant from the Wilmette-based Arthur J. Schmitt Foundation. The professorship is expected to be filled in the spring.

Aside from Catholic universities, at least three public colleges nationally have privately funded professorships dedicated to the study of the Roman Catholic faith, according to one expert. And the University of Chicago Divinity School, which ...
