Ruth Ray, violinist and teacher

Ruth Ray studied with prominent violin teacher Leopold Auer, shared billing with Enrico Caruso and taught many talented musicians before her life ended May 20 at age 101.

Miss Ray spent the last 15 years of her life at the Swedish Retirement Association in Evanston, where a memorial service was held for her Wednesday.

Born in Danville, she was playing the violin by age 4, to the delight of her pianist mother, Anna. As a student Miss Ray played at Chicago Symphony Orchestra open rehearsals, and her progress was monitored by longtime CSO conductor Frederick Stock. In her teens she studied in ...
