We were looking for a fresh storyline relating to Saturday's Mount Carmel-Providence football game that didn't smack of X's and O's.

As far as we know, there aren't any Carmelites teaching at Providence and no Augustinians working at Mount Carmel. And no Providence student is dating a Mount Carmel football player.

So we'll settle for Lloyd and Pat Foster, John Pergi and Brooke Stanton, Breanne Clancy and Melissa Mieszczak, who will play out their own emotional dramas at Gat...

Chicago Sun-Times ; You couldn't miss Frank Kiszka as he roamed the sideline during Mount Carmel football games. Kiszka, who died Saturday morning, was the team's statistician, but he was as big as an offensive tackle. He didn't bother with the other team's statistics, only Mount Carmel's. And you didn't argue with
Nursing home's troubles traumatic; News stories blown out of proportion The Journal Sentinel's articles regarding Mount Carmel Health and Rehabilitation Center have been blown out of proportion, causing undue emotional stress to residents and the staff. I find Mount Carmel a pleasant place to live; that's why I've been here 101 2 years. I've spent 30 days in another facility and was grateful to return to Mount Carmel. Before the Journal Sentinel and its staff cause a tempest in a teapot, think what you are doing to residents and the staff at Mount Carmel. Harvey Kaplan Greenfield; There are troubles, dangers everywhere A recent front page and continuous high publicity of the recent perils at Mount Carmel health center deserve praise for public service public interest reporting. Why is it then, I wonder, that when the staff at St. Francis Hospital recently tried to get attention focused on concerns of under-staffing and perceived potentially unsafe conditions, the Journal Sentinel buried this information in the back of the business section? Must St. Francis or other facilities undergoing cost-cutting, profit-driven staffing cuts provide a Donald Garrison saga before attention is focused on these real-life dangers in other area institutions? Mary Sawicki Milwaukee; Health-care workers are underpaid As a 22-year employee of Mount Carmel, I, too, can tell you what went wrong at our facility. It isn't only Vencor's fault, as a former employee stated in the Journal Sentinel. It's a state-wide shortage of health-care workers in general. This is not a glory job. It takes hard work and patience, along with compassion, to do the best job possible. And just when you think you are ahead, you're not. The state of Wisconsin and Gov. Tommy Thompson need to increase the wages of health-care workers. Then maybe Vencor would be able to change what has been our downfall and get back the good name Mount Carmel had. I believe in this facility, or my great-grandmother and maternal grandmother would not have been residents here for their final years of life. Susan Oaks Milwaukee; Residents know what's good for them For months, dedicated residents and family members of Mount Carmel had spoken out asking that changes in staffing patterns and care quality be addressed. The state of Wisconsin listened and forced changes to happen. But it was Vencor and its employees, as well as the residents and families, that made change happen. Indeed, the future was brighter until Oct. 19, when the people of Mount Carmel were told that it doesn't matter what comfort level they had achieved; Mount Carmel is finished. Whose lives are we talking about? The threat of Mount Carmel Health and Rehabilitation's closure is wreaking havoc on hundreds of individual lives, lives that span eight or nine decades. Now these people are being told to leave their home, where it took them months to adjust. The state of Wisconsin and federal regulators are telling the residents of Mount Carmel what is best for them. The residents already know what is best for them; they demonstrated that earlier this year when they spoke out. Why did the state listen to them then and not now? What is the meaning of dignity in the minds of the residents and family members who call Mount Carmel home? The right to receive excellence of care? Yes. Dignity should also include the right to have a voice and the right to emotional stability. The residents need to know precisely what it is that is condemning their home, especially considering the commitment that Vencor has already demonstrated. The residents deserve to have assurance that they will have future stability. Can a new group of caregivers and a strange new environment promise this? Terri J. Weissbach Mount Carmel Social Services Waukesha; More regulation fine if funding available Diligent nursing home owners welcome help in maintaining high standards of care ("Turn up heat on nursing homes again," Oct. 15). Strong regulations and enforcement are essential. But the public and our legislators need to be aware that quality care for the chr
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ; I feel that justice will be served once Mount Carmel nursing home is shut down. The problems at that facility have been going on a long time. My father was a resident there up until the time of his death in 1993. While at Mount Carmel, my dad fell and broke both hips in separate falls within months
