City escalates battle against life ring thefts
|
A new paint job and a proposal for sharply higher fines are the
latest weapons in the city's war against thieves who steal life
preservers from Chicago bridges.
Ald. Gene Schulter (47th) said he will introduce an ordinance
today to raise the fine to a minimum of $200 and a maximum of $500.
Fines now are $5 to $50.
"I refuse to stand idly by and allow a child or citizen to drown
because some selfish person had to have a souvenir for his basement
to show his friends," Schulter...
