Breast implants popular again as fear recedes

The popularity of breast enhancement surgery is surging here and nationally for the first time since 1992, when health concerns led to a Food and Drug Administration ban on silicone gel implants.

Chicago area doctors estimate that in the last year about 2,000 women have received saline breast implants for cosmetic reasons. They are among the 122,285 women nationwide (most in their 20s and 30s) who have opted for the procedure.

It is the sixth most popular cosmetic surgery.
